Acne Medication:
Check The Ingredients
Acne
medication often contains either:
-
Salicylic Acid
-
Benzoyl Peroxide
It is important to understand the action and difference
of these two ingredients with the acne medication you choose.
Salicylic
Acid
If you obtain
your acne medication without a prescription, be sure to follow
the instructions on the label implicitly.
Salicylic acid
causes the skin to shed the dead cells and helps keep pores unblocked.
If your acne
medication contains Salicylic Acid do not use any of the following
on the same area as severe skin irritation may result:
-
Abrasive cleansers
-
Preparations containing alcohol
-
Any soap or cosmetic preparation that dries the skin
-
Medicinal skin lotions or creams
-
Other acne medication containing such ingredients as benzoyl
peroxide, which dry or peel the skin
Pregnant women should consult a physician as Salicylic
acid can be absorbed through the skin and may cause complications
if used over a wide area.
A common side effect is dry skin.
Benzoyl Peroxide
Acne medication containing Benzoyl Peroxide kills
bacteria which cause acne. This antiseptic agent needs to be used
consistently for up to three weeks before improvement may be seen.
However, many find Benzoyl Peroxide to be quite
effective in controlling mild cases of acne.
About 30 minutes after washing the face, dab on
the acne medication containing Benzoyl Peroxide.
Avoid putting the medication near your eyes, nose,
or mouth. Use a milder solution on the neck.
For good results, leave it on the skin for 2 to
3 hours. If the skin is sensitive however, leave it on for only
15 to 30 minutes.
Dryness is one of the most common side effects.
